Welsh Fabians

The Welsh Fabians are the home of the Fabian Society in Wales.

Helen Taylor is the recently elected Welsh convenor for the Fabian Society.

Following a disastrous 2019 general election for the Labour party in the UK, there are serious concerns about the future of Wales in a new post-Brexit world and with a majority Conservative UK government. The Welsh Fabians will provide a calm, reflective space for exploration of that future. Dangers include the possibility of new restrictions on Welsh devolution, the vulnerability of our NHS and industries (including agriculture) to international trade deals, worsening of the already disadvantaged position of Wales within the Union, loss of EU investment and the implications of the general election result for Welsh and UK Labour. All require careful consideration in order to support the recovery of the Labour party, positively influence UK government policy and minimise harm to our fellow citizens in Wales.

Our objectives in 2020 are to:

  • Increase Fabian Society membership in Wales to enable the re-establishment of active local groups, starting with South, Mid- and North Wales groups
  • Provide opportunities for meeting and debating Welsh political issues throughout Wales
  • Provide reasoned and thoughtful guidance on policy affecting Wales to the Wales and UK governments

Our Fabian MPs and AMs, members of the Labour and Co-operative Parties and unions and the public must all be part of this important debate.
